Judo of NJ, Inc. Promotion Process

Dan Ranks: All promotion recommendations and applications for USA Judo Dan rank certificates from New Jersey Judo Clubs will be processed through the Judo of NJ, Inc. Promotion Committee. Time-in-grade is a minimum requirement for consideration.

Required for Promotion Recommendations:

Completed USA Judo Dan Promotion form with signatures

Full judo resume (can include supplements) and competition record (for active athletes applying "on points")

Evidence of kata and technical demonstrations by Sensei/Coach

Copies of previous USA Judo rank certificates

Copies of special awards/recognitions

Passport-size photo (for yodan and above, name on back)

Appropriate fees payable to USA Judo

Current USA Judo membership (for rokudan and above, must be active for the past four years)

For Sandan and Below: Completed applications are reviewed and processed by Judo of NJ, Inc. and USA Judo. Yodan promotions must be recommended by a USA Judo certified coach at least two ranks above the candidate.

For Yodan and Higher: Fully completed applications will be submitted to Judo of NJ, Inc. Promotion Committee, we will sign off on it and send it to USA Judo Promotion Committee for review. Rokudan and above are only considered during in-person meetings at the USA Judo Senior National Championships and National President’s Cup.

Approval Process: All applications require approval by Judo of NJ, Inc. Promotions are typically granted step-by-step, though exceptions may apply in rare cases, with full documentation required for consideration of a "skip" promotion. Skip promotion fees must be paid.
